Black is one of the hardest colors to keep in good condition in mini rex. The color reacts to heat. When the coat is exposed to excess heat or sunlight it becomes sunburned. It will turn a rusty red color. Here in south Louisiana special care must be taken to protect the coats of black rabbits. Other varieties will become sunburned as well but it is most pronounced in the black variety. Our first mini rex were black and broken black. We lost the very first doe to a broken leg. We tried to get it fixed, but she died under anesthesia. Our 2nd and 3rd does are still with us and producing! Pudding, our first broken black buck now resides in Rosepine with his new owner Ashlee.
Gabriel, our 7 year old son, is claiming the black mini rex as his own. He won a BIS with Paprika when she was a junior.
